Fight on!
Science on the Rocks (SotR) is a public science speaker series hosted the third or fourth Thursday at the end of each month at Rhythm Room a speakeasy in Downtown Los Angeles. Our goal is to connect Angelinos with local scientists; we place emphasis on bringing in early career researchers. Because we believe science should be accessible for everyone, attending SotR is always free, no exceptions.
You can RSVP on Eventbrite. We hope to see you at our next event!
Dr. Isabel Smith is currently a Knauss Fellow in NOAA research's International Activities Office helping their labs and programs collaborate with other countries. She got her PhD at USC in Geological Sciences studying mercury and water quality and their effects on Indigenous communities. She also obtained her B.S. from the University of the South. When she's not in the lab, you can find her at a concert, looking for records & CDs, baking, or walking her dog, Buckley.
Dr. Tori Cassady is a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA School of Medicine Department of Urology and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles Department of Mineral Sciences. She bridges geobiology and biomedical sciences to study calcium biomineralization across domains of life and through deep time. Tori graduated with her PhD from USC where she studied geomicrobiology, and she has bachelors degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry from the University of Iowa. Tori is a musician, a baker, a reader, and a member of the Orchid Society of Southern California. She loves trying new food in her adopted home of Los Angeles.
A huge thanks to the Rhythm Room team for their support of SotR and letting us use their venue, especially Cindy, Vince, Pat, Loren, Seth, and Mando. We appreciate you all and couldn't do this without you!
Thank you to the USC Earth Science crew for being our village, continously showing up, supporting us, and making this event so fun. Though not pictured here, we would like to acknowledge the support of Michelle Zill and Dr. Will Berelson at USC Earth Sciences.
